Research, development and process technology

The building is part of the process.

A research or production process cannot be separated from the facility that supports it. M4Forge connects the technical definition, business case, equipment, controlled environment, specialist utilities, process safety, delivery and acceptance. Security is integrated where the programme requires it.

Built for consequence.

01 / Operating requirement

Start with the process, not the cleanroom class.

A cleanroom class defines one condition. It does not decide what crosses the boundary, what the process emits, how people and materials move, which utilities the equipment depends on, what happens when a service fails, or how sensitive information is controlled. Those decisions determine the facility.

  1. 01What has to remain controlled for the work to succeed?
  2. 02What can harm the result, the people or the environment?
  3. 03Which knowledge, samples, materials and equipment require control?
  4. 04Which conditions have to remain available during operation and failure?
  5. 05What evidence will authorise the facility for use?

02 / Facility types

Different processes create different facilities.

The category does not set the answer. The process, material, operating state, consequence and assurance route do.

01 / Research

Research laboratories and development environments

Experimental work needs stable conditions, safe material handling, equipment integration and a clear route from trial to repeatable use.

02 / Contamination

Cleanrooms and controlled suites

Airborne, surface, chemical or viable contamination and environmental stability can affect the research, product or test result.

03 / Production

Advanced manufacturing, assembly and test

Yield, precision, equipment interfaces, specialist services, material flow and controlled information have to survive the move from prototype to repeatable production.

04 / Process

Chemistry development, pilot and production environments

Containment, reaction or substance hazards, ventilation, segregation, drainage, waste, emergency response and scale-up decisions shape the building.

03 / Integrated process system

The interfaces decide whether it works.

A controlled environment cannot be separated from its equipment, utilities, operators, maintenance route, safety case or test basis. Security is another interface where the programme requires it.

Interface ruleOne owner. One required input. One closing record.
  1. 01
    Flow and zoning

Who and what crosses each boundary, in which state, and by whose authority?

  2. 02
    Fabric and penetrations

Which junctions, openings and service routes affect control, cleaning or containment?

  3. 03
    Controlled environment

Which airborne, surface and environmental conditions govern the work?

  4. 04
    Process services

What demand, quality, isolation, discharge and recovery does each utility require?

  5. 05
    Equipment and vendors

Which loads, access, controls, maintenance and acceptance inputs remain outside the base build?

  6. 06
    Hazards and emergency

What has to be prevented, contained, detected, isolated and responded to?

  7. 07
    Information, IP and security

Which information, assets and supplier records need protection, and does the programme impose a security route?

  8. 08
    Acceptance and change

What proves the condition, who accepts it, and how is later change governed?

04 / Research and development

When the answer has to be proved before it is built.

Some requirements cannot be resolved from a catalogue or precedent. M4Forge can turn the uncertainty into a bounded question, identify the evidence needed, compare options and test the critical assumption before it becomes a construction commitment.

  • Research and standards note
  • Operating and performance requirement
  • Flow, zoning or adjacency study
  • Material, system or equipment comparison
  • Mock-up, prototype or observed test
  • Record of what is proven, assumed and unresolved

05 / Assurance

The process determines the assurance route.

A single label cannot close every duty. The applicable process, substances, product regime, security requirement and operating authority determine what has to be designed, tested and accepted.

01

Controlled environment

Classification, monitoring and requalification where the operating requirement calls for them.

02

Product and quality

Qualification or validation where the applicable product and quality regime requires it.

03

Substances and process

COSHH, DSEAR, process-safety and environmental inputs where the materials and operations require them.

04

Information and protective security

IP, data and protective-security requirements through the applicable client route.

05

Facility acceptance

Building, equipment and integrated commissioning evidence accepted by the named authority.

Appointment boundary M4Forge defines and coordinates the agreed built-environment scope. Specialist design, statutory approval, security authority, process ownership and validation remain with the named competent parties unless expressly included.

06 / Technical record

The commission leaves a usable technical record.

The exact outputs depend on the appointed role. Each record has a defined purpose, author, reviewer and acceptance route.

01Define
  • User and operating requirement
  • Basis of design
  • Flow, zoning and room data
02Integrate
  • Utilities and equipment interfaces
  • Coordinated drawings and specifications
  • Responsibility and package records
03Prove
  • Commissioning and acceptance plan
  • Inspection, test and controlled-change evidence
  • Operating, recovery and remaining-risk record
